I sat on the edge of what had once been a fancy bed. Now it was dingy, the sheets unwashed for who knew how long. Diggs was on the bed across from me, elbows on knees and hands folded as he leaned over, staring at the floor.

I didn’t know if he was saying a silent prayer or just thinking about what was to come. Part of me wasn’t willing to ask.

The room was nice enough. It appeared to have been made for children, at least that’s the conclusion I came to from the two double beds.

“I don’t like it,” Diggs said abruptly.

“Like what? The bed? Is it too soft? Too hard?” I tried to joke with him to ease his nerves. “You can have mine.”

He forced a snort of a laugh and shook his head. “No, I don’t like whatever this is. This…gauntlet…sounds like it’s going to be dangerous. I have a feeling it’s some kind of gladiator thing.”

“That’s exactly what it is.”

He looked up from the floor and frowned. “How do you know that?”

“I heard one of the guards talking about it. They were saying something about how there was no way we could fight our way through all of the gladiators Baltan had waiting for us.”

Diggs’s frown deepened. “I didn’t hear them say anything.”

“Not the guards who brought us up. The ones standing outside this room right now.”

“How…you know what? Never mind. I don’t want to know.”

I sighed. “Heightened senses are one of the perks that come with…whatever this gift is I have.”

“You think that gift is going to help us get out of here alive?”

I drew a long breath through my nostrils and laid back on the bed. When my head hit the pillow, my sense of smell was overwhelmed by feathers and dust. I shot back up to get way from the scent.

“I think that together, we will be fine. But we have to stick together. You understand that?”

He nodded weakly.

We’d been in the room for a while. Based on the coming light through the window, I figured we’d been in there for a at least six hours, maybe longer. I’d looked out the window at one point. The view was incredible. We were on the top floor, giving us an incomparable vantage point from which to take in the entire estate, at least that side of it.

Crews of men and women worked tirelessly at the smoldering remains of the stables. The fire had been extinguished long ago, but streams of smoke still wafted out from the destruction.

Tall grass stretched out across the meadows until it reached the forests hugging the property in their shadowy embrace.

Horses nibbled away at some of the grass a few hundred yards from the stables. I was glad to see the animals hadn’t been harmed with my little diversion.

The door lock clicked, and the knob turned. I spun around quickly, like a child who’d been caught doing something they shouldn’t.

Two guards stepped inside, followed by Baltan.

“I hope you were able to get some sleep,” he said.
